VE Lab partner brief · hardware

ESP32 / Tab5 hardware catalogue

Chips we saved on X, photos and blueprints of the boards, the cited apps mapped onto VE projects, and a priced wishlist.

As of Sat 29 Aug 2026, EST Sources: M5Stack, Waveshare, PiShop.us, Adafruit, Amazon, AliExpress, X bookmarks (1,333), here.now site search Classification: shareable with partners · no credentials

1. Naming — there is no chip called ESP5

Espressif’s line is ESP32, then letter-and-number variants (S3, C3, C5, C6, P4, H2). A search for “ESP5 microcontroller” on X returned nothing. Two real things get abbreviated that way in conversation:

For partners: if the ask is “get an ESP5,” order a Tab5. If the ask is “cheap board we can flash this weekend,” order an ESP32-S3 with a screen — official Tab5 is sold out.

2. Chips in our X bookmarks

Scanned 1,333 bookmarks. MiniMax “M3” and NVIDIA-the-company posts are not chips. What we actually saved:

Chip Saves In a bookmark as
ESP32-S3 6 PaperMono S3R8, $15 XiaoZhi box, Waveshare 1.54″ radio, ElatoAI, LiteWing, Bitle

4. Cited apps → VE use cases

Every row is something already cited in bookmarks, here.now pages, or this week’s X. The right column is where VE can copy the pattern, not a promise we will ship it.

Cited application Source Board VE leverage
Live radio / now-playing e-paper + hold-to-talk into chat @hot_town Waveshare S3 1.54″ MINY / Dank: desk object that shows the current mix, taps, or booth status without unlocking a phone.

COMET air mouse (C3 + MPU6050) @ebokify C3 + GY-521 Dank: DJ / presenter gesture pointer. Cheap experiment, not a product line.
Pi 5 retro console shopping list Pi 5 kit $180–$235 Dank / MINY listening party: optional. Same Pi 5 as the Gemma box.

Highest-leverage trio for VE: (1) Waveshare e-paper as a MINY/Dank now-playing desk, (2) $15 S3 voice box as a ChipMonk/VE Lab agent, (3) Tab5 or PaperMono as the EventBuoy/NFC object when stock exists. Pi Zero 2 W is the Linux twin of (2), already specced.

ESP32-C5 · not Tab5

LILYGO T-Display C5

ESP32-C5, Wi-Fi 6, 16 MB flash, 8 MB PSRAM, 1.9″ ST7789. This week’s pocket Wi-Fi/BLE scanner project. Buy this only if the job is RF tooling, not a tablet demo.

9. What you are actually buying

The silicon is a few dollars. The product is the face, the audio path, and whoever pays the cloud bill.

Cloud LLM / STT / TTS already exists · monthly cost Firmware (Elato, XiaoZhi, Bitle) open source · flash, don’t invent Board · screen, mic, speaker, case this is the product people hold ESP32 silicon a few dollars · solved
The chip is cheap. The face, the audio, and the cloud brain are the product.

10. Firmware and kits worth flashing
